NDIS Requirements: Can I Access the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme has a handy checklist to help you find out if you meet the requirements to access the NDIS. If you are a person with disability and want to join the NDIS, you need to meet the access requirements which includes conditions such as the availability of the NDIS where you live, your age, your residency status, your disability and in some cases your early intervention requirements.

There are 5 questions in the NDIS Access Checklist:

  1. Do you have Australian residency?

  2. Are you under 65 years old?

  3. Do you live in an area where the NDIS is available?

  4. Do you usually need support from a person or equipment to do everyday things for yourself because of an impairment or condition that is likely to be permanent?

  5. Do you need some supports now to reduce your support needs in future?

The requirements to access the NDIS mean that you must be under 65 years old, live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or hold a protected special category visa. You also need to live in an area where the NDIS is currently available. Lastly, the impairment or condition that you need support for should likely be permanent or lifelong.

Even if you do not meet the requirements to access the NDIS as laid out above, you may still be able to access other supports.

If you believe you meet the requirements to access the NDIS, you can apply to join the program.
